Forsyth County Wins National Award for Water Reclamation Facility Operated by JJ&G Services

One of only 24 winners across the country, Forsyth County's Manor Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) is a recipient of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2008 Regional Clean Water Act Recognition Award.

"Forsyth County government takes a tremendous amount of pride in providing safe and reliable water and sewer services to our customers," Director of Water and Sewer Tim Perkins said. "Receipt of this award really reflects the county's commitment to excellence."

One of just six facilities recognized in the Southeast, the Manor WRF's operations and maintenance are provided under contract to the County by Jordan, Jones & Goulding. "The county would like to recognize Jordan, Jones & Goulding for their dedication and hard work in obtaining this award, as it was through their preparation and management that this was received," Perkins said.

The Manor WRF received first place regionally and nationally for its operations and maintenance in the small nondischarging plant subcategory. Cited as winning factors were the facility's outstanding compliance record, effective automation system, proactive equipment maintenance, and commitment to protecting the environment and community.

Among its many achievements, the Manor WRF maintained 100-percent permit compliance and met self-imposed process limits to produce a superior quality effluent that is used to irrigate an on-site, 18-hole golf course and some nearby residential lawns. By fine-tuning its automation, the facility also has increased energy savings and made other significant process improvements that have resulted in better bacteriological control, decreased mechanical problems and improved plant safety.

"EPA is proud to recognize the municipalities that go far beyond the minimum requirements needed to meet the Clean Water Act," said EPA Region 4 Administrator Jimmy Palmer.

Tours at Cauley Creek Water Reclamation Facility
The Cauley Creek Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) is a unique wastewater treatment facility.  It not only has the first membrane system (Zenon MBR) ever operated in Georgia, but most of the plant is housed in structures that look like a barn and other farm buildings.  This unusual architectural treatment allows the facility to blend with the surrounding environment.  The architecture of the plant and its first of a kind process make it attractive for tour groups.

Tours are conducted for several reasons; the most important reason being for educational purposes.  Over 300 students from local middle schools, high schools, and universities have visited Cauley Creek WRF!  Additional tour groups such as developers, engineering firms, regulatory agencies, and industries from around the world (Korea and Sweden to name a couple) have come to see a working membrane reactor wastewater treatment plant.  All are amazed at the compact size of the 5.0 MGD plant and the high quality of effluent.
